Anger Management at Emerge:
"Violence is a Choice"
Emerge started
offering Anger Management services in 2002. There is an ongoing debate
nationwide about the appropriateness of an abuser education program
offering anger management services. Our program at Emerge offers similar
information that is presented in our abuser education groups, and the
program is designed for:
-
People who
have been violent in a barroom brawl or other fights with strangers
-
People who
have resisted arrest and gotten into fights with police officers
where the arrest charge was not domestically violent in nature.
-
People who
have road rage issues
-
People who
have low-grade anger toward everyone, but are not abusive in their
relationships
-
People who
have been required to complete an anger management group by the
court or child protective services (DSS)
If someone has
been violent in a relationship, but was required to enter into anger
management, Emerge may require attendance in the eight session FIRST
STAGE of the abuser education groups in lieu of or as a precursor to
entering into the anger management program.
Emerge conducts
phone screenings of people who are interested in anger management
services in order to give an initial assessment for appropriateness.
The Emerge Anger Management program
consists of 14 sessions, and is offered in individual or group sessions
depending on enrollment numbers. There are separate sessions for men and
women.
